 Roth Residential has been installing residential geothermal heat pumps systems, the most recent for a home in Victor NY. This type of heating/cooling system pumps heat to or from the ground, using the earth as a heat source during the winter or a heat sink in the summer. This design takes advantage of the moderate temperatures in the ground; The upper ten feet of the earth's surface maintains a nearly constant temperature between 50F and 60F, to boost efficiency and reduce the operating costs of standard furnaces. The setup costs may be higher than conventional heating/cooling systems but the difference is returned in energy savings in three to ten years. Indoor components typically last about 25 years while the outdoor ground loop's life is estimated at least 50 years.
